Safe Relationship Guide

Safe Relationship Guide – Level 1

Equipping Pastors and Leaders to Recognise, Respond to, and Prevent Abuse

22 September – 13 October 2025

Why This Training?

For over 20 years, I have worked in the field of abuse prevention and recovery—supporting victims, training leaders, and building safe spaces for healing. In 2024, I authored the End It Now program, “Go Find My Sheep,” a global initiative by the Seventh-day Adventist Church calling the church to intentionally seek out and protect the vulnerable.

This training was born out of a clear need:

  • Safeguarding training is essential, but it only provides the what.
  • Pastors and leaders also need the how—the practical, biblical skills to support victims and protect the vulnerable within the unique context of church ministry.

The Safe Relationship Guide – Level 1 provides that missing link.

What You’ll Learn

Over four weeks, you’ll gain clarity, confidence, and tools to address abuse with wisdom and compassion.

Week 1 – Understanding Vulnerabilities and Grooming

  • ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and how they create vulnerabilities
  • Grooming tactics in both secular and church contexts
  • Love bombing, targeting, and features of narcissistic relationships
  • Stages of grooming
  • Practical Tool: Red flag checklist

Week 2 – Recognising Abuse

  • Signs of emotional, physical, sexual, financial, and spiritual abuse
  • Distinguishing sexual abuse from domestic abuse
  • Cycle of Abuse: Tension → Incident → Reconciliation → Calm
  • Power & Control Wheel – how abusers manipulate
  • Practical Tool: Spot-the-pattern worksheet

Week 3 – Narcissistic Abuse vs. Other Abuse

  • Unique features of narcissistic abuse (gaslighting, devaluing, and discarding)
  • Differences from other abuse types
  • Profile of an abuser: charm, charisma, spiritual masks
  • Practical Tool: Narcissistic vs. other abuse comparison chart

Week 4 – Responding and Supporting Victims

  • Language that heals vs. language that harms
  • Biblical forgiveness vs. enabling harm
  • Forgiveness and reconciliation – how to discern the difference
  • Listening and responding with a person-centred, Christ-like approach
  • Practical Tool: Safe conversation guide for leaders

Why It’s Different from Safeguarding Training

  • Safeguarding = mandatory compliance, policies, reporting obligations
  • Safe Relationship Guide = deeper understanding of abuse dynamics, spiritual dimensions, and the unique challenges victims face in Christian settings
  • It equips leaders to listen, support, and shepherd wisely—without minimising harm or misusing Scripture
